No Borders Humanity Organization (NBH) and Shafaq Al-Hayat Organization for Women and Children (SAHOFWC) recognize enforced disappearance as one of the most serious human rights violations affecting communities around the world. It is no longer a phenomenon confined to a particular geographic region or political system.
While enforced disappearance was historically associated primarily with military dictatorships and authoritarian regimes, it can today occur in increasingly complex contexts, including internal conflicts and situations of political and security instability. It may also be used as a means of intimidation, political pressure, silencing opposition, and targeting individuals perceived as political or social opponents.
The two organizations emphasize that enforced disappearance violates not only the rights and dignity of the victim, but also profoundly affects families and communities by leaving loved ones in a state of prolonged uncertainty and anguish over their fate and whereabouts.
Guided by their commitment to human rights, human dignity, justice, and the rule of law, NBH and SAHOFWC call for stronger prevention mechanisms, effective efforts to establish the fate and whereabouts of missing persons, protection and support for affected families, and accountability for those responsible for such violations. Victims and their families have the right to truth, justice, effective remedies, and reparation.
The organizations further call on all relevant stakeholders to strengthen institutional and community cooperation, support national and international human rights mechanisms, and work to end impunity, contributing to safer, more just, and more rights-respecting societies.
